Former Celtic star Chris Sutton has criticized Brendan Rodgers, calling him a hypocrite, for leaving Celtic in the middle of the season to join Leicester City.

The Northern Irishman was appointed as the new manager of the Foxes on Tuesday on a contract running till the end of 2022, with Leicester agreeing to pay compensation to Celtic to secure the Irishman’s service.

At the back of this, the 46-year-old Neil Lennon has been brought in as the interim manager as Celtic travel to play Hearts.

According to Sutton, Rodgers’ untimely departure leaves Celtic in a ‘mess’.

Sutton told The Daily Record (h/t Mirror):

“Brendan Rodgers was always going to leave Celtic. But the timing of it has made a mockery of some of his past statements about a dream job.

The speed of the move tells you it’s surely been in the planning for a while and he’s left the club in a mess.”

Rodgers’ exit leaves Celtic’s future hanging in the balance

Sutton feels the right time to leave for Rodgers would have been the end of the season where he could have left with nine trophies and two Champions League qualifications. With 11 games left in the league and Scottish cup quarter-final on Saturday, his departure comes at the most unexpected moment.

Leicester City have moved up to 11th spot in the Premier League ranking after securing their first home win over Brighton since Boxing Day after goals by Demarai Gray and Jamie Vardy.

It cannot be denied that Rodgers’ arrival has lifted the morale at the King Power which was evident from the way Leicester played and the kind of rapturous greeting he received when he waved from the director’s box.

This appointment was long known to be in the cards for the Foxes but how far this gets them only time will tell.
