Real Madrid have reportedly decided to terminate Santiago Solari as manager with immediate effect as soon as the Real Madrid board decide on a suitable successor.
The Spanish giants are virtually left with nothing to fight for this season, with back-to-back defeats to FC Barcelona, dumping them out of Copa del Rey and leaving them 12 points adrift of the league leaders.
But the decision to sack Solari came after Madrid’s humiliating 4-1 defeat to an energetic Ajax side, thus getting knocked out at the round-of-16 stage from Champions League.
Sources have revealed to ESPN, that the board have decided to let Solari go and have sped up the process to seek an appropriate replacement.
Sources have also reported the board have spent the last 24 hours desperately looking for the right person to take over the top job until the end of the season.
The club president Florentino Perez and the board have conducted an emergency meeting to decide on the new manager to take charge of the historic club which lasted till early hours of Friday morning but failed to arrive on a definite conclusion.
Apparently, Zinedine Zidane and Jose Mourinho have emerged as the most seemly candidates to take over but the former is most unlikely to return with departing just last season.
Given that, Mourhino seems like the most likely person whom Real will turn to, as currently he is under no contract with any club.
Jose Mourinho has led them in the past, from 2010 to 2013, and has won the La Liga is not among the most attractive options though as a number of club directors feel his appointment would further divide the club’s unsettled fanbase.
The Portuguese told Deportes Cuatro (h/t Mirror) on Tuesday he has fond memories of managing the club:
"I have a fantastic memory of working in Real Madrid. It is a unique experience and different to the rest of the clubs I have been at. We did fantastic things, we won the league in a unique way. We also had bad moments, I made mistakes, but after, the experience made me a better manager and person."
However, it should be pointed out that with two former appointments this season in Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari giving them rather undesired results, they need to ensure that their next appointment does not lead them to the same outcome.
