Real Madrid crashed out of Champions League following Tuesday’s shocking 4-1 loss to an energetic Ajax side, which eliminated the Champions by a 5-3 aggregate scoreline. The Spanish media terms this defeat and exit as “end of an era” and the “death of the club”.
With their exit, the future of their interim manager, Santiago Solari, hangs in the balance, who has a contract until the end of 2021.
The Spanish media has launched a barrage of criticism against the current side after Tuesday night’s exit, which brought an end to the Los Blancos’ three-year long hold on the Champions League title.
While some questioned the failure to find a replacement for Christiano Ronaldo, some outright demanded President Florentino Perez’s departure.
Following are some of the worst takes in the Spanish media.
Pro-Madrid Spanish daily, Marca displayed a powerful image in their front page of an emptying Bernabeu stadium with the words “Here lies a team that made history: a humiliating end to an unrepeatable cycle.”
Marca comparing the exit to a death is certainly a very extreme take and an indicator that the result did not go down very well with them.
Barcelona-based Sport had another powerful image in the front page of an unnamed Real Madrid player wearing his shirt over his head in dejection with the headline: “end of an era.”
The front page further read: Madrid suffers a shameful KO in the Bernabeu that throws them out of the Champions League. And the Bernabeu calls: 'Florentino, resign!”
AS ran the simple headline of “Tragic Week”, and discussed in length their previous defeat to Barcelona and had an image of an euphoric Ajax side celebrating their remarkable victory.
Mundo Deportivo offered an image of the Madrid players reacting to the fourth Ajax goal with glumness alongside headline “Nothing at all.”
The Spanish champions having been knocked out of the Copa del Rey, Champions League and 12 points adrift of league leaders Barcelona, one is left to wonder what Madrid has left to play for this season.
